Kingsbridge Community College Trust
Concentrating on Raising Standards, The 14-19 agenda and the
curriculum in the Specialist Subjects.
This is a Single Trust opened in May 2008. The College has
Science, Arts and Leading Edge status and serves the rural market
town of Kingsbridge and the surrounding villages.
Partners: - Astra Zeneca, Plymouth University, The National
Marine Aquarium (Plymouth), Rio CIC, The Royal Society of Arts.
The Trust partners Astra Zeneca and Plymouth University were
already working with the college and together with the additional
partners enabled the school to match the specialisms, Arts and
Sciences with local organisations who had National links.
Also the school wanted high profile organisations that would raise
aspirations for both staff and pupils.
Examples of trust impact include:
- Pupils experience working in the University laboratories of the
Neurological department.
- Professionals from the University contribute to school
curriculum in Psychology and Biology lessons...
- The Opening Minds Curriculum (20% of the Year 7curriculum) is
increasing skills and competencies rather than content and
knowledge. (See TES article “Deer Poo, hippy Rooh and lessons in
life for us all”) Accreditation by ASDAN is now being
pursued.
- In Mathematics, Science and PHSE the teaching staff are working
with the Aquarium, Astra Zeneca and Rio CIC, respectively.
They are developing new ideas, ways of working and learning
activities to engage students.
- Groups of students and staff visit Astra Zeneca and other
partners to enrich educational and personal experiences, improve
collaborative working and raise student career aspirations.
- Joint CPD activities take place with Astra Zeneca
personnel.
- An invigorated Senior Leadership Team which has been given
fresh challenges, vision and impetus with one now leading on Social
Enterprise with RIO CIC.
- With proactive Trust partners the school has had to address
issues and take on new challenges.
Plans for the future include identifying why students make
particular future career choices, to address the limitations that
pupils impose on themselves. To provide curriculum contact
opportunities with Trust Partners to remove many of the artificial
boundaries between partners and the school community, so that
pupils come to accept partner involvement as a normal school
activity. Develop joint staff training opportunities to maximise
the diverse skill sets amongst partner organisations and the
school.
The School and the Trust partners believe they have made the right
decision to form the Trust.
“We are not quite sure where we are going but we want to be
on the journey” (Roger Pope, Headteacher, Kingsbridge
Community College)
